Container Homes in Rural and Holiday Areas to Combat Bushfires?

Updated: Feb 5, 2020

With the recent bushfires in Australia, we think container and modular construction is going to become an amazing alternative for holiday and rural areas across the country.

What inspired this article was a report written by The Age - below is an extract: “When the fires raged through this part of East Gippsland this past week, and the pet owners were unable to get to the kennels to retrieve their dogs and cats, the Thompsons had no other choice but to get inside the shipping container with all the animals and the bare necessities and pull the door closed tight.

They, together with the 13 animals, stayed inside the six-metre container - made fire-proof with specially designed panels on the outside - for the best part of six hours from 10.30 am on New Year's Eve.”

Amazingly, they all survived, with their animals, whilst most of their property was damaged and burned.

This made me think – Shouldn’t we be building more of these homes out of steel-frame or containers in order to create housing that stands much more of a chance?

We would love to help in any way we can to combat the recent crisis and potentially mitigate the impact of future fires.

Typically, for a container home built and installed in Victoria, this will cost roughly $1800-$2000 per m2 turnkey.
